The 420MW Murra Warra wind farm, which was approved by the Andrews Labor Government, is designed to generate clean electricity required to power 248,000 households in Victoria while reducing over 1.3 million tons of greenhouse gasses annually.
A total of 116 wind turbines will be installed on farmland north of Horsham in the Wimmera district of Victoria.
Operated by RES, the project is expected to contribute to the government’s aim to generate 25% of total power renewable sources by 2020 and 40% by 2025.
The project is expected to create 610 jobs during construction phase and 15 positions once operational.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne “This year we’ve approved 228 turbines across four windfarms – that shows the market is responding to the streamlined approvals process we introduced, and it demonstrates the confidence companies have in investing in Victoria.”
Upon completion, expected in two years, the wind farm will be one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
RES Australia Chief Operating Officer Matt Rebbeck said: “This is our second big project in Victoria and when it is constructed RES will have brought over $1bn in new renewable energy projects to the State.”
