Construction of the Inga 3 Low-Head – the phase I of the Grand Inda hydroelectric facility – which is to be located on the banks of the Congo River, will commence in October 2015.
The second phase called Inga 3 High-Head will add 3,000MW of capacity, while five other plants will be installed on the same dam to provide a capacity of 40,000MW.
The construction of the proposed hydroelectric plant is accounted to be around $8.5bn, while the financing needs are anticipated to around $12bn.
The Africa Development Bank is financing the base studies and consultants of the project and has been joined by the World Bank, the French Development Agency, the European Investment Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
This project is in line with the Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
