Hayes is replacing Charles Hendry, who held the portfolio for the last two years in the Coalition Government.

Commenting on the appointment, RenewableUK director of external affairs Jennifer Webber drew attention to Hayes vast experience.

"We know that he already appreciates the importance of providing the right training for the skilled workforce of the future.

"Tens of thousands of those workers will be in the green energy sector, so Mr Hayes’ experience at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills will serve him in good stead as Energy Minister, and we look forward to working with him," said Webber.

Webber also commended the work of the outgoing Minister Charles Hendry, lauding his work in setting up of the Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force.

The new Energy Minister also released a statement that read, "I am proud to answer the Prime Minister’s call to assume the role of Energy Minister at such a crucial time both for our energy security and for tackling climate change."
