Thirty-five renewable or sustainable energy organisations have issued a joint statement in response to the UK government’s Energy Policy Review, outlining the priorities and specific policy actions that should come out of the process.
The manifesto calls on the government to re-affirm its commitment to climate and renewable energy targets and to develop the long-term policy framework necessary to provide enduring investment signals for businesses, including a long-term carbon market beyond existing emission trading schemes.
The manifesto also calls for the formation of a single body responsible for achieving sustainable energy targets and provide incentives to reduce consumption, properly value decentralised energy systems and accelerate the growth of all forms of renewable energy.
Green Alliance director, Guy Thompson, who wrote an open letter to energy minister Malcolm Wicks outlining the manifesto said: “It is only two years since the last energy review put energy efficiency and renewables at the heart of the fight against climate change. The government needs to grasp the nettle and develop a long term framework that will allow these technologies to deliver the carbon reductions that we so urgently need.”
