As per the MoU, the Australian company’s solar power technology will be initially installed at a pilot plant in China with plans to use it in other plants in the future.

The 1MW plant is expected to be built in Hebei province in Beijing. It is planned to be scaled up to 30MW within three to six months after being commissioned.

RayGen Resources uses gallium arsenide for its solar PV instead of silicon-based technology thereby making the modules efficient and effective.

RayGen chairman and CEO Bob Cart was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald as saying: "They think our technology could be a real contributor to their demand long term and they are thinking that our costs could be cheaper, our scale-up faster, and ultimately provide a better value than PV.

"While the solar resource is less than some other places the value of the clean energy there is very high, so it’s economically making a lot of sense there."

China Three Gorges intends to develop 20GW solar projects by 2020.

China Three Gorges solar energy division deputy director Zu Liu said: "We believe this technology has a big potential to lower down the entire investment of solar power plants, so we decided to do some pilot projects in China to test its commercial use.

"At our company we mostly do solar power plants of about 100MW and at that scale we need to study this technology very deeply, to see if it has any limitations to using it at this scale."
