The INR2.7 billion facility will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Waste Management, a subsidiary of Ramky Enviro. Initially, the company will invest INR800m in the project and over the next three to four years it will scale up the investment. The plant is expected to be operational in 2014.
The facility, which is awaiting environmental clearance, includes the establishment of a landfill and treatment site to handle about 150,000 tonnes of hazardous waste annually, and about 90,000 tonnes of treatment and stabilisation facility, a biomedical waste treatment facility of about 1,500 tonnes and an electronic waste treatment facility of about 30,000 tonnes.
In the later stages, the company will establish a recycling facility, which will handle solvents, lead acid batteries and plastic and paper totalling over 50,000 tonnes, and a renewable energy project and waste-to-energy project of 2MW each.
