The state government of Rajasthan in India has set out plans to add some 4,500 MW of additional capacity over the next four years, initially mostly wind power and lignite fired. The proposals come while the state awaits developments in the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, which will pass through Rajasthan.

According comments attributed to state energy minister Gajinder Singh, the plans will see as much as 2,000 MW in wind development and a further 1,000 MW from lignite. Private sector developments are also encouraged.

The state government has estimated that about 4,500 MW of additional capacity will be required to meet demand by 2012.
