START-UP

The fifth unit of the Raichur thermal power plant in Karnataka is expected to be commissioned ahead of schedule. The completion of the unit will mark a unique Indian success story because the 210 MWe addition was funded in India, made in India and installed in India.

The sixth unit at the same plant, currently being installed by Baharat Heavily Electricals Ltd (BHEL), is also ahead of schedule. It is expected to be completed five months early, saving Karnataka Power Corp $70 million.

Based on its success at Raichur, BHEL is hoping to win another Karnataka order for two 500 MWe units. These generating units are to be installed at a power plant at Toranallu near Bellary.
