The purchase order is pursuant to a supply agreement recently signed between the two companies for the providing key components and control systems for the Q-Drive powertrain system that is being incorporated into the Fisker Karma.
As per the terms of the purchase order, Fisker will receive the supply of the production systems from Quantum this fall to begin the volume production of Fiker Karma.
The production is scheduled to start in February 2011, with a planned production volume of 15,000 vehicles per year.
Fisker Automotive, an American car company co-founded by Quantum and Fisker Coachbuild, secured a $528.7m loan from Department of Energy in April 2010 for the development and production of two models of plug-in hybrid EVs, including the Karma, a four door sports sedan, and a line of family-oriented models developed under Fisker’s Project Nina program.
Alan Niedzwiecki, president and CEO of Quantum, said: “Quantum is proud to be supporting Fisker by providing key Q-Drive plug-in hybrid powertrain components to enable the luxury high performance sedan, Karma, to excel in fuel economy and performance. It is exciting to see Fisker moving quickly into the production phase.”
