Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) have signed technology license contracts with Univation Technologies and The Dow Chemical Company for the development of Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

In February 2012, QP and QAPCO signed Heads of Agreement to co-develop the Al Sejeel petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan located 80km north of Doha, Qatar.

Under the license agreements, Univation Technologies will provide its polyethylene (PE) technology and The Dow Chemical Company will provide the polypropylene (PP) technology for the project.

Based on the technology agreements, QP and QPCO will design the plant to produce 2.2 million metric ton per annum of polymers, including PE and PP resins.

Energy and Industry Minister Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada said, "We firmly believe that the development of the downstream petrochemical sector will create countless opportunities for the production of new intermediate and derivative products."

The petrochemical complex will produce ethylene, high-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, butadiene, and py-gasoline.

Al Sejeel petrochemical project is scheduled for completion in 2018 and will feature a world-scale mixed-feed steam cracker, with the original mixed feedstock of ethane, butane, and naphtha.

QP and QAPCO will hold 80% and 20% interest in the complex respectively.
