Pöyry is to further its involvement in the 650MW Nam Theun 1 project in Laos after being awarded the owner's engineering services assignment by lead developer Phonesack Group.

The company has been associated with the development of this project since 1995, providing technical consultancy and engineering services, and has been supporting Phonesack Group since 2014.

In continuation of the previous assignments preparing the project’s feasibility study, basic/detailed design and supervisions of the early works, Pöyry is now tasked with completing the owner's engineer services as well as the environmental and social mitigation measures of the project until completion.

Nam Theun 1 hydropower project is located at Nam Kading River, approximately 33km upstream of its confluence with the Mekong River and 270km from Vientiane in Central Laos. It is a major project of the Lao and Thai Power development plan and will strongly contribute to the electrical supply security of both countries.

Commercial operation is scheduled to start by the end of 2022.
