Power Trading Corporation (PTC) of India has begun trading power imported from two hydro plants in Bhutan.

The corporation has signed an agreement for the supply of power from the 336MW Chukka and the 60MW Kurichu projects, which will double its trading volumes to 900MW from the 400-500MW of power traded in 2001-2002. Tantra Narayan Thakur, chairman and managing director of PTC, said that the company also planned to be trading power from the 1060MW Tala hydro project, also in Bhutan, which is expected to be commissioned in 2004-2005.

PTC is also exploring trading opportunities with Nepal, which presently has a power deficit of 50MW but expects to have a surplus of 150MW with the commissioning of a new power station.
