The consortium, which will build the Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Clean Energy campus, includes researchers from academia, two US National Laboratories and private sector.
The Energy Innovation Hub will be focused on developing energy-efficient building designs that will save energy and cut pollution.
Buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of the US energy consumption and carbon emissions. Developing energy efficient designs for buildings is expected to reduce the nation’s energy use, cut pollution, and create jobs in the building efficiency industry.
Pennsylvania governor Edward Rendell said that this significant federal funding to establish the Energy Innovation Hub will build on Pennsylvania’s growing reputation as a clean energy leader.
“The great ideas that will come from this groundbreaking energy lab will help to reduce our nation’s reliance on foreign energy sources – representing a win-win for taxpayers,” Rendell said.
