Construction has started on a new natural gas fired combined cycle power plant in New Jersey, USA, PSEG has announced.
The 540 MW Sewaren 7 power plant is part of plans by the utility to boost infrastructure in an area devastated by superstorm Sandy in 2012. The $600 million facility will replace an existing plant at the site in Woodbridge, NJ, and is due to start delivering energy to the PJM market in the summer of 2018.
PSEG last year awarded an EPC contract for Sewaren 7 to Black & Veatch. The plant will use GE’s H-class gas turbine technology and will run primarily on natural gas, with ultra-low sulphur distillate as a back-up fuel.
Hurricane Sandy’s storm surge flooded parts of Woodbridge, including generating stations and adjacent switching stations. PSEG has since embarked on a $1.2 billion programme to protect its infrastructure against severe weather events, including a project to elevate the Sewaren switching station.
