The approximately $150m investment is the next step in WPL’s efforts to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions at Edgewater Unit 5 to comply with Wisconsin’s Reasonably Available Control Technology (RACT) requirements.
Barbara Swan, president of WPL, said: “Our emission control projects at Edgewater are an integral part of our company’s commitment to protecting the environment and providing both our current and future generations of customers with safe, reliable and environmentally responsible energy.
“We believe the SCR at Edgewater Unit 5 further demonstrates our commitment to the environment and the air quality around our plants.”
Pending a written order from the PSCW, the decision authorizes WPL to build a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. WPL anticipates the SCR at Edgewater Unit 5 will be ready for commercial operation in late 2012.
Edgewater Generating Station Unit 5 is a 380MW coal-fired facility, along Lake Michigan.
The generating station includes three generating units with a total nameplate capacity of 770MW. Unit 3 is a 60MW nameplate capacity unit that was placed in service in 1951; Unit 4 is 330MW nameplate capacity unit that was placed in service in 1969; and Unit 5 was placed in service in 1985.
