The new Hainan interconnection includes four high voltage alternating current (HVAC) 500kV single core self-contained fluid filled (SCFF) cables, laid under the Qiongzhou Strait in southern China.
With a transmission capacity of 600,000kW, the cable system will link the Gangcheng transformer substation in Guangdong’s Zhanjiang to the Fushan transformer substation in Hainan’s Chengmai County.
Under the contract, Prysmian will design, supply, install, and commission the submarine power cable along the existing 500kV cable circuit to effectively enhance the electricity supply quality between the two provinces.
The contract represents Prysmian’s first extra high voltage submarine cable project in China.
Prysmian Group energy projects senior vice-president Massimo Battaini said: "This contract has strategic value, due to being awarded in China, a market with high growth potential, which is investing RMB11.1 trillion ($1.8 trillion) in its power industry in the period from 2011 to 2020."
The new submarine cable link is expected to benefit customers including the 1300MW nuclear power plant, which is being built in Changjiang County.
Prysmian plans to manufacture the cables in its submarine cables center in Arco Felice, near Naples, Italy.
The firm will use its Giulio Verne cable-laying vessel to undertake marine installation of cables, with planned completion in the first quarter 2019.
