Prysmian Group has secured a €13m contract from Tideway to deliver inter-array cables for the 309MW Rentel offshore wind farm in the Belgian North Sea.

The Italian firm will design, manufacture and supply 33kV submarine cables in various cross-sections, together with the related accessories.

The submarine cables will be manufactured at Prysmain facility n Drammen, Norway. They are expected to be delivered by the summer of 2017 and the termination work could be completed by the spring of 2018.

The Rentel  offshore wind farm will have 42 of Siemens’ turbines, each with an electricity production capability of 7MW.

The turbines will be have a rotor diameter of about 154m and shall be installed on grounded monopoles. Foundation depth could range between 24m to 34m.

The wind farm has a total estimated budget of €1.1bn and it is owned by a consortium of several industry players including Otary RS, Electrawinds Offshore, Rentel NV, Aspiravi Offshore, Power@Sea DEME, SRIW Environment, Socofe and Z-Krancht.

The wind farm, which will have an expected life span of 20 years, will produce enough energy to light up more than 2,10,000 Belgian houses annually.

It will reduce more than 440,000 tonnes of CO2 and 10,000 tonnes of SO2 being released into the atmosphere.
