Prolec GE, a joint venture between GE Energy and electrical transformer supplier to the utility industry, Xignux, has announced a $50 million project to expand its manufacturing capabilities in Monterrey, Mexico.

The expansion is focused on two of Prolec GE’s product lines, power and commercial transformers, reportedly making it one of only a few North American manufacturers of the power transformer line.

The expansion of Prolec GE’s manufacturing capabilities is focused on addressing the needs of utilities, engineering firms, developers and independent power producers.

The expansion will enable Prolec GE’s power transformer line to include transformers up to 1,000MVA with voltages up to 550kV, which is in response to the worldwide infrastructure capacity expansions, and in support of the growth of the electrical industry.

The commercial transformer line is expected to increase its current production volume over 30% to support the growing demand of the wind generation segment.
