Progress Energy said that the rate request has three main parts: a decrease in the monthly amount customers are charged for fuels used to generate electricity ($5.60 reduction on a residential 1,000kWh bill); an increase of $1.53 in the monthly charge used to pay for energy efficiency and demand-side management programs; and a decrease of five cents a month in the charge for renewable energy.
The net impact of the three filings is a monthly reduction of $4.12 on a 1,000kWh residential bill. If approved as filed, the average net reduction will be 4.6% for commercial customers and 4.4% for industrial customers.
Lloyd Yates, CEO and president of Progress Energy Carolinas, said: “We know the lingering recession has taken a toll on many of our customers, and we’re focused on keeping electricity affordable, reliable and environmentally sound for the households and businesses that depend on us.”
For a residential customer using 1,000kWh, the total monthly bill will be reduced to $101.89 from the current $106.01, if the request is approved by the utilities commission. The new rates are scheduled to take effect December 1, the company said.
