The price of pre-owned US nuclear plants was up dramatically in 2000
The price at which US nuclear plants change hands was up dramatically in 2000, according to a new NAC Worldwide Consulting report. Entitled US Nuclear Plant Sales & Ownership Consolidation: 2000 in review, the report showed that four of the five new major pending transactions announced this past year exceeded more than $400 per kW (excluding fuel), a 15-fold increase over transactions consummated in the preceding year.
Price increases were put down to the basic paradigm shift in plant value, coupled with the entry in 2000 of Dominion Energy and Constellation Nuclear to the buying mix.
The report also suggests that consolidation in the US nuclear utility industry is set to continue. Based on transactions actually concluded or announced to date, 70 per cent of the US nuclear generating capacity will be owned by the 12 largest US utilities, a 30 percent increase over 1999.
