Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) intends to redevelop the Tana power station on the Tana river and is inviting firms interested in tendering for the work to apply for pre-qualification.

Tana, located about 120km north of Nairobi close to the main Thika/Sagana Road, was originally constructed in 1932. The redevelopment work will involve replacing the existing power house with a new power house in its immediate vicinity. It is intended to develop the project under an Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) contract, financed by KenGen, with tenders being called this year.

The new power house will house four vertical axis Francis turbines with electrical capacities of approximately 2 x 4.3MW and 2 x 5.5MW. Each pair of turbines will be fed by a separate steel penstock from the existing headworks. The EPC contractor’s scope of work will include: design; refurbishment of the existing headworks; construction of the new power house and penstocks; procurement, erection, testing and commissioning of all mechanical, electrical and auxiliary equipment; construction of a new 66kV substation; and connection of the new generating equipment to the grid.

Firms or groups of firms interested in tendering for the work are invited to apply for pre-qualification by completing project prequalification documents. Where two or more firms seek prequalification jointly, the intended form of cooperation must be clearly stated and the standard forms completed for each firm separately. One original and three copies of applications for prequalification must be submitted by 12:00 noon local time on 21st October 2005 to the following address:
