Following completion of scheduled refueling and maintenance outage, the Unit 1 has resumed operations for generating electricity safely and reliably for customers late Friday (6/6) after completing.
As part of the refueling and maintenance program, about 40% of the uranium fuel has been replaced and a large number of equipment maintenance tasks and upgrades have been performed to improve plant safety, reliability and performance.
To address the vibration issues experienced over the past few years, the plant’s turbines have been modified while modifications to turbine and associated equipment will allow the plant to operate until its next refueling outage.
PPL Susquehanna senior vice president and chief nuclear officer Timothy Rausch said the company invests millions of dollars to replace or upgrade systems and components during every refueling outage.
"Modernizing our systems and keeping our existing equipment in good condition is part of our overall approach to operating safely," Rausch added.
Located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, the Susquehanna plant is operated by PPL Susquehanna and is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna and Allegheny Electric Cooperative.
