Pöyry has secured a technical services assignment from PX Engineering for the 299MWe biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which will be built in Teesport, North-East UK.

The assignment is part of PX Consultants’ technical owner’s engineering contract with MGT Power.

Poyry has been working with MGT during the early stages of project development, where it provided front end engineering design and technical support during the tender process, engineering procurement construction (EPC) contract and during the financial close.

The new assignment involves assistance in design review and construction supervision for the project. Poyry will also provide technical support during erection, commissioning, testing, project handover and also during warranty period.

The financial details of the contract have not been disclosed.

The £650m Tees Renewable Energy Plant (TEES REP) will use sustainable biomass fuels from the UK and globally. It is expected to produce about 2.4TWh of electricity every year.

PX Group CEO Ian Clifford said "We are delighted to have been selected to support MGT on this prestigious biomass project.

"The fact that the plant is on our doorstep, that it increases our involvement in the renewable energy sector and endorses our engineering and project management expertise, makes it particularly satisfying."

Pöyry Energy Business Group UK Renewables head Julian Scutter said "The signing of financial agreements is a great success for the renewable energy industry and paves the way for the world's largest new-build biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant to be constructed in the UK.

"The plant will utilise modern circulating fluidised bed technology to generate 299MWe of electricity – supplying the equivalent of 600,000 households – and will be one of the most important thermal power plant build projects for decades."
