Poyry has won an advisory and oversight contract valued at Euro 3M (US$4.2M) for the Egiin hydro power scheme in Mongolia.
The project is to be Mongolia’s first large hydro scheme, and is planned to have an installed capacity of 210MW – increasing that of the region by 20%.
To be constructed on the Egiin river just upstream of its confluence with the Selenge, the project is to include a 90m high dam and is scheduled to be commissioned by mid-2013.
Under the contract, Poyry will undertake a review of the design and project management proposed by the Engineer, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor. In addition, the consultant will perform construction as well as commissioning supervision, plus training.
Poyry has undertaken technical studies on the project for the government since 1993. It said that the hydro scheme would ‘considerably reduce’ Mongolia’s dependence on expensive energy supplies from Siberia.
