Bosnia

VA Tech Hydro has won a follow-up contract to modernise Jablanica 3 hydropower plant for Elektropriveda Bosne I Hercegovine (EP BiH) VA Tech Hydro will supply components for the plant, including a new runner, distributor, turbine shaft and a governor. Delivery of the parts will be made within 13 months, and the plant will be fully operational within 23 months. The modernisation is due to increase the peak power output of the plant by 22%.

The project is fully self-financed from within Bosnia.

CHINA

VA Tech T&D has won a E2.2 million contract from Datang Luoyang Thermal Power Generation Company for an expansion project for the 30-year-old Luoyang power plant located in Henan province in central China.

VA Tech T&D will supply two 515/20kV, 360MVA transformers and accessories, including transport to site, supervision of site installation, and commissioning. Production is due to start in December 2004. Delivery of the first unit is scheduled for May 2005, and the second by August 2005.

Denmark

Horns Rev Offshore Wind Farm Extension

The Danish Energy Ministry has asked interested companies to prequalify by 1st September for the development contract of a 275 million Euro 200MW extension to the existing Horns Rev offshore wind farm located at Nysted-Rodsand off the West coast of Denmark in the North Sea. The bids will be judged primarily on price per kWh, design and location, and construction timetable. Expected commissioning is 2008.

INDIA

Alstom has won an order from Larsen & Toubro of Mumbai, India to supply a steam turbine for a combined cycle power plant to be built at Vemagiri in the state of Andra Pradesh. Commercial operation is scheduled for the start of 2006.

Malaysia

Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Energy, Special Triumph, and Posco Machinery & Engineering have won a $34 million contract from Sime Engineering for the design and installation of the hydraulic steel structure for the Bakun dam.

MEXICO

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has won a $27.5 million contract from Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) of Mexico for rehabilitation work on Tula 5.

Tula is located in Hadalgo state, and the plant consists of five 300MWe oil-fired units. Tula 5 was built by MHI is 1982. The rehabilitation contract is for repair and replacement of obsolete equipment, to enhance overall reliability. Completion of the contract is due by January 2006.

Oman

The Oman Oil Company has appointed SNC Lavalin as consultant for a $425 million 700MW combined cycle captive power plant at an aluminium smelter plant in Oman. Start-up of the power plant is scheduled for 2007. Three companies – Bechtel, Hatch and SNC Lavalin – have expressed an interest to carry out the EPC phase.

SWITZERLAND

VA Tech Hydro has won a E9 million contract from Rätia Energie to modernise the electro-mechanical equipment at the Küblis power plant in Switzerland to increase the average annual energy production to 175GWh.

The contract includes the delivery, installation and commissioning of two horizontal twin Pelton turbines, two synchronous generators, four spherical valves, and a distribution penstock to replace the six existing machine units

UK

Loch Luichart onshore Wind Farm

A joint venture, known as Infinergy, consisting of Koop Duurzaame and FPD Savills is planning to build a £185 million 225MWe onshore wind farm, located near Inverness, scheduled for start up in 2008. The wind farm will comprise 75 turbine units, and the project is likely to be built in two phases of 150MWe and 75MWe.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to the Scottish Executive by the end of 2004. Siemens is expected to be the EPC turnkey contractor working for the Infinergy joint venture.

UK

Areva’s T&D division has won a E20 million turnkey contract from National Grid Transco (NGT) of the UK to upgrade the electricity grid in central England.

The first part of the contract is to install two 400kV Mechanically Switched Capacitor Bank Damping Networks (MSCDN) in two locations, to ensure voltage stability across the region. Areva T&D will design, install and commission MSCDNs at Ham’s Hall and Drakelow substations. This is due to be operational by October 2005.

The second part of the contract is to extend NGT’s Feckenham 400/66kV main feeder substation to allow the local distribution network operator to satisfy the regions rising demand for power. Areva T&D will design, install and commission equipment, including a power transformer, circuit breakers and disconnectors. This is due to be operational by March 2006.

USA

Palomar Power Plant

Sempra selected Kiewit Industrial as the EPC contractor for the construction of this 550MW plant, located in Escondido, California. The plant will consist of two 170 MW GE natural gas-fired turbines, each with a duct-fired Nooter/Ericksen HRSG to supply steam to a 210 MW GE D-11 steam turbine. The plant is due to start up in 2006.

USA

Western Greenbrier clean coal power plant

Western Greenbrier Cogeneration has employed Parsons as the EPC contractor for an 85MW $215 million CFB-based power plant that will use waste coal as a fuel. Alstom will provide the CFB boiler. The plant will be located in Rainelle, West Virginia, and is part of President Bush’s Clean Coal Power Initiative. The US Secretary of Energy has formally approved the project.

Venezuela

Tocoma hydropower project

Venezuela’s state-owned utility Edelca will decide which of five consortia are qualified to bid on the design, construction, installation, and testing of ten 216MW Kaplan turbines for a $750 million project for a 2160MW hydropower plant on the Lower Caroni River.

Civil engineering on the project, including river diversion, is 5% complete.
