Currently the factory’s total production capacity is 10,000 tons per annum with the company looking to increase it to 100,000 tons by developing its own vertical thermal reduction technology by 2018.
In November 2009, Posco’s started its magnesium refining business with an MOU for an investment and the first stage of construction was started in June 2011.
Start of test operations and stabilization followed past March 2012, and the first set of products were shipped in September the same year.
Through the production of magnesium ingots, the steel company is expecting to strengthen its supply network between family companies and promote sales in Japan and North America and eventually expand into the world market to secure global competitiveness.
