The Cascade 4 well is connected to the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) BW Pioneer, located about 250km off the coast of Louisiana at a water depth of 2,500m.

The BW Pioneer, owned by BW Offshore, is the first FPSO to produce oil and gas in US waters.

Production of the Cascade field started on 25 February this year from the Cascade 4 well, reports wallstreetjournal.com

BW Pioneer has the capacity to process 80,000 barrels of crude oil and 500,000m3 of natural gas a day; the FPSO can also store 500,000 barrels of crude onboard.

In addition, the vessel can be disconnected from its anchoring system, allowing it to be moved out of harm in the event of a hurricane or severe storm, Petrobras said.

Cascade and a sister field, called Chinook, are part of an ultradeepwater oil reserve discovered in the Lower Tertiary region of the US Gulf of Mexico.

Petrobras holds a 100% stake in the Cascade field.
