The new facility is a key concept in the city council’s integrated strategy to increase recycling rates to over 65% by 2020 and to use non-recycled waste as fuel in an energy-from-waste plant.
The front of the building will provide new accommodation for the city council’s award-winning Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Re-use centre, giving it capacity to repair, recycle and dismantle around 20,000 domestic appliances annually.
The new materials recycling facility will replace the city council’s existing MRF, which has an annual capacity of 75,000 tonnes and occupies an adjoining site with access from Fourth Drove.
A further planning application had been submitted at the end of January 2009, proposes using the old MRF site for the construction of an energy-from-waste facility that will produce electricity and heating water.
