The wind farm, which is said to be the largest in the Caribbean, will generate 95MW of clean energy. All the electricity generated will be supplied to Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) under a 20-year Power Purchase and Operating Agreement.
The FVSI project was originally planned to have a capacity of 75MW, but was later increased to 95MW keeping the number of turbines constant at 44.
The project is installed with Siemens SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines to generate electricity enough to power 30,000 homes.
The Finca de Viento Santa Isabel project has attracted $250m private investment into the economy and created 350 jobs.
Puerto Rico Governor Luis G. Fortuno said that the Puerto Rico aims to generate 12% of energy from renewable sources by 2015, and increase it to 15% by 2020 and 20% by 2035. Several renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 220MW are under construction in the island, he said.
