The Mexican construction company Grupo Protexa, along with its US partner, IEP Global Development, has started to investigate the prospects for the construction of a private power plant which will be used to supply electricity to the El Salto industrial zone located just outside Guadalajara. The two companies have already signed a deal with El Salto for its energy supply.
The plant, which will burn natural gas, is expected to enter service in two years. It will have a generating capacity around 400 MWe. However the project is only in its initial phase; the size of the project, the technology it will employ and its location have all yet to be decided upon.
Meanwhile, the US company Sempra has won a 10 year deal to supply natural gas for the Presidente Juarez power plant located at Rosarito, Baja California. Fuel deliveries to the plant will begin in December 1999. The contract is estimated to be worth up to $1 billion.
The Rosarito power plant is expected to have a total capacity of approxminately 1500 MWe. Sempra will construct a 37 km pipeline from the US border to the site.
