Two hydro projects with combined capacities of 124MW are to be built on the same river in Panama by Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo en America Latina (Ideal), the Mexican developer has announced.

The biggest project, Baitun, will be a 70MW plant (two 35MW Francis turbines and generator units), and will be built on the river Chiriqui Viejo, in the province of Chiriqui.

The second scheme, Bajo de Mina, will have a total installed capacity of 54MW. The plant will also have two units, though of 27MW each.

Both projects are being developed under concession to build the plants and associated works, operate the facilities and then sell electricity to market. The plants are being built near Panama’s northern border with Costa Rica.
