Remote handling specialist Oxford Technologies has won a contract to supply the UK National Nuclear Laboratory with a multi-functional inspection rig.

The rig will be mounted with multiple heads to remotely characterise and examine highly irradiated materials during post-irradiation examination in a hot cell ‘cave’ environment.

Oxford Technologies will be responsible for design, build and inactive commissioning of the rig, which will be used for a number of years in a radioactive environment.

"We see this as an important expansion of our business, building on the transfer of our approach and expertise from nuclear fusion through nuclear fission decommissioning and now to specialist equipment, where remote handling in extremely hazardous environments are the key requirements," commented Oxford Technologies’ business development director, Stephen Sanders.

"We look forward to developing a relationship with National Nuclear Laboratory, not only supporting their own programmes, but also working with them to understand the opportunities to support them in the wider UK nuclear decommissioning challenges."
