US-based electricity provider Otter Tail Power Company along with utility company Xcel Energy has filed an application with the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) seeking permission to build a high-voltage transmission line.

The 70 mile long, 345kV power line will run from a new substation situated about three miles west of Big Stone City in South Dakota to the existing Brookings County substation located 12 miles east of Brookings, reported the Associated Press.

Otter and Xcel’s permit will cover the southern 40 mile portion of the project from north of Gary to Brookings County.

The South Dakota PUC is planning to hold a public meeting in order to know the comments and views of residents. The meeting will be held on 31 July at 6:30 pm at McCrory Gardens in Brookings.

The two companies are expected to bring the power line operational by 2017.

Otter Tail and Xcel Energy companies are part of CapX2020, which is a joint initiative of 11 transmission-owning utilities.
