OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Inc. (OSRAM Opto), a Germany-based company, has introduced new small 1 W LEDs, OSLON LX LEDs, for backlighting LCD displays. The two white versions of the Oslon LX provide strong light that can be very efficiently injected into thin light guides with the aid of an optimized lens. The displays can therefore be made ultra-thin and can be uniformly illuminated even with single-side injection.

With the light output of typically 75 lm or 90 lm at an operating current of 350 mA, it is sufficient to inject the light from two sides or even from only one side to provide uniform backlighting for TVs and computer displays with a diagonal of up to 65“. The polynomial lens with a beam angle of 125° is designed to achieve an injection efficiency into the light guide of almost 80%.

The OSLON LX is available for two color spaces. The multi-white version (high color gamut white) covers 100% of the sRGB color space and has a typical light output of 75 lm. The ultra-white version of the LED covers 80% of the sRGB color space and is a little brighter with a typical light output of 90 lm.

Winfried Schwedler, marketing manager for LCD Backlighting at OSRAM Opto, said: “With the smallest 1 W LED yet, the multi-white OSLON LX, we are covering the market standard. Manufacturers who opt for the more efficient ultra-white version and accept slightly less than the standard with 80% coverage of the color space need fewer LEDs to achieve the required brightness level and can save up to 30% in costs. So every customer can have precisely the LEDs that they need for their particular applications.”

OSLON LX is manufactured using the new ThinGaN chip technology with chip level conversion and provides high optical efficiency and extremely uniform distribution of light. The lens is optimized for maximum light extraction. Its beam characteristic ensures a high injection efficiency of almost 80%.

Measuring just 3 x 3 x 1.6 mm, the LED is perfect for side injection into light guides with a thickness of 2 to 4 mm so the displays can be made with very thin profiles. These properties make the LED a key product for the LCD market. TVs equipped with the OSLON LX will be premiered at 2009’s IFA exhibition which takes place in Berlin from September 4, 2009 to September 9, 2009.
