A plan for a major wave power project in North America has been announced by Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) and industrial group Lockheed Martin.

The US companies have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to collaborate on a utility-scale project using OPT’s proprietary system PowerBuoy.

No details were available to quantify the scale of the proposed project or schedule. However, they said the project is expected to be either off the coast of California or Oregon.

The companies said that they have previously worked together using the PowerBuoy system for US homeland security and maritime surveillance.

Separately, OPT recently signed a deal with the Leighton construction group to build wave power plants off the coast of Australia.
