According to the report, the Unit 7 at the Nanticoke power plant, that resumed services, was shut from August 10, 2009.
The Nanticoke power facility has commenced its operations between 1972 and 1978. The power plant is located in Nanticoke on the north shore of Lake Erie, approximately 80 miles (130 km) southwest of Toronto.
The Nanticoke facility has a total of 3,920MW power generation capacity. The power plant comprises eight units generating 490MW of power each. One MW of power generated for the plant can serve approximately 1,000 homes in Ontario.
By the end of 2014, the Government of Ontario intends to close all of the coal burnt generation facilities in the province, for health and environmental reasons.
OPG owns four coal-fired power plants with 6,400MW of generation capacity, which includes Atikokan, Thunder Bay, Lambton and Nanticoke. The company plans to convert a few of its coal plants to biomass power plants. Initially it would implement its plan with Atikokan in the northern part of the province and then with Nanticoke.
