Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPGI) has appointed Albert Sweetnam as executive vice president (EVP) of new nuclear at Darlington ,effective January 19, 2009. Previously, Sweetnam was the executive of SNC Lavalin Ltd and has extensive, multi-billion-dollar project experience. His success was in delivering large construction projects in Ontario, Canada and internationally.

This senior appointment sends a strong signal that Infrastructure Ontario’s Request for Proposal process is well underway and that OPG is taking the necessary steps to prepare for setting up its project management team that will deliver the next new nuclear reactors in Ontario, said Murray Elston, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Nuclear Association. The nuclear industry is looking forward to the Government of Ontario’s announcement on which vendor will be selected in Ontario so the industry can get on with the job of providing clean, reliable and affordable electricity to Ontarians, said Elston.

This is particularly important for Canada’s nuclear industry as other provinces such as New Brunswick, Alberta and Saskatchewan are considering new nuclear construction and will be looking to Ontario as they move closer to making decisions, says Elston.
