The government of Ontario, Canada will invest $16.9m in a local Toyota plant to promote the production of energy-efficient vehicles.

The investment will augment Toyota’s production of the Lexus RX450h hybrid model at its Cambridge plant while creating 400 new jobs for the local economy.

Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty remarked that the investment will help the region maintain its leadership in new technologies for the auto sector.

The funding will be provided from the Strategic Jobs and Investment Fund with the Federal government of Canada also contributing a matching amount.

Toyota, meanwhile, has pledged an investment of $125m towards the new energy-efficient vehicles production line.
