THE CANADIAN PROVINCES OF Manitoba and Ontario have signed an agreement that could lead to the construction of a joint US$4.1B hydroelectric project, on the Nelson river in northern Manitoba.
The Canadian federal government is funding US$223,255 to help pay the cost of the US$1.5M feasibility study for the 1250MW Conwapa project. The study will look at the economic and technical issues involved in the project and will take about six months to complete.
Opposition to the project has already started, however, with the Western Canada Wilderness Committee claiming that Manitoba’s woodland Caribou population is threatened by the scheme.
