R S Sharma, chairman and managing director of NTPC, after his visit to 648MW gas-fired power plant at Jhanor, said: “Proposal is being pursued with the Federal Government of Nigeria for setting up coal and gas based power plants in Nigeria and sourcing of gas for NTPC’s plants in India.”
Sharma informed that the site of the two 250MW coal-based power plants in Trincomalee region in Sri Lanka have been identified and would be constructed through a joint venture with Ceylon electricity company, which is under finalisation.
It is also pursuing coal blocks for sourcing coking coal and thermal coal amongst SAIL, RNRL, CIL, NTPC and NMDC, for which the company has established International Coal Venture. The Joint Venture would explore several opportunities in Australia, Mozambique, Indonesia and Canada.
Presently NTPC has an installed power generation capacity of 30,644MW through 15 coal and 7 gas-based and for joint venture power stations. The company by 2017 plans to reach a power generation capacity of approximately 75,000MW.
NTPC chairman stated that the projects, with a capacity of 17,930MW, are under various stages of implementation, and by 2012 the company would reach target of 50,000MW. The capacity mix of 2012 includes 8,000MW from gas, 40,000MW from coal and 2000MW from hydro power. The company, by 2017, is expected to have a 75,000MW capacity mix consisting of gas 10,000 MW, coal 53000 MW, nuclear 2,000 MW, hydro 9,000 MW and renewable 1,000 MW.
The company also provides consultancy services in project management, engineering, operation and maintenance of power plants to clients within and outside India.
