The state firm fires 16 thermal projects utilizing about 175 million tons of coal, according to The Economic Times.

An NTPC official said dependence on imported coal will be reduced subsequently.

"By 2017, we are aiming to meet 20% of our coal requirements from seven captive coal blocks," the official added.

NTPC signed a tripartite escrow agreement, the final permission for opening a mine, with Coal Controller and State Bank of India.

"With this, all necessary clearances required to commence mining operation at Pakri-Barwadih block are in place, and we are expected to commence mining operations anytime soon," the official continued.
