India's state-run power utility NTPC plans to triple its energy generation capacity to 75,000MW by 2017, focusing on hydroelectric power as one of its main sources.

The company wants to develop a total of 9000MW extra from hydro power by the intended year, as part of a 21,941MW target of additional power for its 11th plan (2007-12), with attention on hydro, coal mining and nuclear power strengthened.

This would give NTPC an installed capacity of 51,000MW by 2012 and over 75,000MW at the end of the 12th plan (2017) – approximately three times more than its current figure of 26,194MW.
