US-based NRG Energy, through its subsidiary NRG Solar, is planning to install rooftop solar photovoltaic arrays at the Mandalay Bay Resort Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The proposed 6.2MW solar installation is anticipated to generate enough clean electricity to power around 1,000 homes.

According to the company, this solar project is MGM Resorts’ first commercial solar project in the US.

Commenting on the development, NRG Solar president and CEO Tom Doyle said that the new 20,000 panel solar rooftop array at Mandalay Bay will enable the resort to reduce its energy costs.

MGM Resorts International chairman and CEO Jim Murren said, "Partnering with NRG Solar to install the solar rooftop at Mandalay Bay highlights a major milestone in our efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce our consumption of the planet’s limited resources."
