The nuclear watchdog’s decision to increase the oversight for the plant is in line with its inspection findings and plant issues.
NRC said that the additional oversight of the nuclear plant comes after two electrical fires and a plant shutdown in March.
The company also reported a problem with an emergency diesel generator and had many unplanned reactor shutdowns last year.
Those findings are violations of NRC requirements and Progress Energy is required to respond to those violations, according to the nuclear agency.
The additional NRC inspections will provide assurance that the root causes of the performance issues are understood and corrective actions are sufficient to prevent recurrence.
