The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a supplement to the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (FSEIS) for the Indian Point nuclear power plant license renewal application.

The updated document, earlier released in December 2010, features new information about possible impacts of the Buchanan facility in New York on the aquatic environment.

Indian Point, which is owned by Entergy Nuclear Operations, is the site of two pressurized-water reactors.

The initial operating license of the power plant’s unit 2 is for 40 years and it is due to complete on 28 September 2013, while the initial license for the unit 3 runs through 12 December 2015.

Entergy, which is planning for a 20-year license extension for each unit, submitted an application to the NRC seeking the license renewals in April 2007.

NRC said as part of its review of the application it performed, a detailed assessment of potential environmental impacts if the plant continues to operate for the extended periods of time.
