The office will be headed by Shri Sanjay Kumar Gumasta, additional chief engineer (civil).

The Government of India had ‘in principle’ approved five green field sites in October 2009 for setting up PHWRs in Haryana (4x700MWe), Madhya Pradesh (2x700MWe) and Light water Reactors (LWRs) based on international cooperation in Gujarat (6x1000MWe), Andhra Pradesh (6x1000MWe) and West Bengal (6x1000MWe).

NPCIL has commenced pre-project activities at these sites. The pre-project activities will be undertaken in four phases. The work on first phase comprising of site investigation and various related studies in respect of these five sites have been initiated in full swing, the company said.

NPCIL vision is to reach 20,000MW or more by the year 2020.
