NorthWestern Energy seeks approval from the Montana Public Service Commission to purchase and operate a 40MW wind energy project in central Montana, US.

In April 2011, the company announced its plan to purchase the $86.1m Spion Kop Wind Project, which is yet to be developed by Compass Wind.

Construction on the power project will start after NorthWestern gets regulatory approval, with commercial operation expected to begin by the end of 2012.

The company said both the energy and associated renewable energy credits will be used to meet the renewable portfolio standards obligations in Montana law.

NorthWestern provides electricity and natural gas in the Upper Midwest and Northwest regions of the US.
