A new coal gasification project launched by utility consortium brings clean coal one step closer to reality

Energy Northwest, a consortium of 16 public utility districts (PUD) and three municipal utilities in Washington state, have announced plans to develop a 600 MW two-unit integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant in the west of the state.

The $950 million project is slated for a still undisclosed location and could run on a variety of variety of sources such as coal or petroleum coke.

More than 20% of the project’s projected costs is earmarked for a carbon sequestration programme for which the consortium has forged an alliance with the Blue Sky Carbon Sequestration Coalition at Montana State University.
