German wind turbine maker Nordex is buying Danish rotor blade moulds manufacturer SSP Technology for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase includes intellectual property (IP) rights, a workforce of about 70 and the facilities spread across in an area of around 10,000m2 in Kirkeby, Denmark.

SSP Technology holds several patents for the production process of rotor blades.

Through the acquisition, Nordex seeks to expand its engineering skills to develop larger and high efficient rotors and turbines.

The Danish firm has produced rotor blades for turbines ranging between 1.5MW to 8MW, since being established in 2001.

The largest rotor blade prototype produced by SSP to date has the length of about 90m. SSP is known for its offshore designs, especially the 83.5m model used on Samsung Heavy Industries 7MW turbine, which is now owned and operated by the UK Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, as well as the 74.4-metre units on Senvion 6.2M152, according to RECHARGE NEWS.

Nordex develops and manufactures rotor blades at its facilities in Germany and Spain and also works with its partners in production and mould engineering.

According to the German turbine manufacturer, by integrating its turbine manufacturing with SSP’s mould and prototype engineering can allow it to respond flexibly to fast-changing market conditions.

Nordex COO Jose Luis Blanco said: “Our partnership with SSP Technology extends as far back as 2003 and has always been very successful and constructive.

“I am convinced that we will be able to significantly strengthen our innovation ability by integrating the blade experts at SSP. Rotor blades are key to lowering the cost of energy.”
