Nine independent power producers (IPPs) are expected to contribute an additional 1893 MWe of electric generating capacity, according to the 1999 national programme, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) announced last month (February).
The additional capacity will include the following:
115 MWe from Southern Electric Power Co’s Punjab thermal plant, due to be on line in March;
140 MWe from Habibullah Coastal in April;
Uch Power’s 586 MWe plant, which is also due to be on line in April;
Rousch Power’s 412 MWe thermal unit which is due to enter service in April;
Liberty Power’s 235 MWe unit, expected to come on line in the same month;
and Japan Power’s 120 MWe unit, which is also expected to be on line in April.
Further power will come from the Chashma Nuclear Power plant, a 330 MWe unit which is due to be commissioned by October.
